Walkways, steps and porches

Concrete walkways and steps in the Denver metro

Front walks, side yard runs, porch slabs and steps, poured level, pitched to drain and built for daily traffic.

The first thing a visitor walks on

A front walk and steps set the tone for the whole house, and they take a beating: snow shovels, deicer, foot traffic and the freeze and thaw that lifts and drops a slab all winter. When a walk settles toward the house or a step heaves, it turns into a trip hazard and a place for water to collect.

We replace and pour new walkways, entries and steps with even risers, a solid landing at the door and a slight pitch so water runs off and does not pool.

Side yard walkways are a common ask on newer homes, where the builder left rock or dirt between the house and the fence. A concrete run there gives you a clean path to the gate, the trash cans and the back yard.

The details

Steps and walks that stay safe

  1. Even risers

Steps are formed at consistent heights, so nobody catches a toe on the one that is off.

  2. Pitched to drain

Walks and landings slope slightly away from the house and the door, so snowmelt runs off before it can freeze in place.

  3. Support to the edges

A compacted base under the full width, edges included, helps keep the walk from sinking along the sides.

Good to know

Walkways and steps: common questions

Can you replace just the front steps?

Yes. We can break out and repour front steps and a landing on their own, or do the steps and walk together so they match.

How wide should a front walk be?

Wide enough for two people side by side is a good rule, and many front walks are around four feet. We size it to the house and the entry.

Can you pour a walkway in a narrow side yard?

Usually, yes. The strip between the house and the fence is a common spot for a new walkway, and the forms and the pour are planned around the access.
